The following excursions all involve conveniently short distances, and are easily accessible by public transport.
inatura Dornbirn – the hands-on museum
The inatura Museum offers a host of fascinating displays aimed at bringing our natural world closer. Various different "habitats" feature a series of video shows as well as offering hands-on contact with minibeasts and animal products. In the "Science Zones" over forty different interactive stations allow visitors to experiment with a wide range of physical phenomena.
Riefensberg “Juppen” workshop – the history of our regional costume
The Riefensberg "Juppen" Workshop is where the traditional Bregenzerwald regional costumes, or "Juppen", are manufactured. It is also a museum and a centre where handicraft courses are held in the production of the regional costumes. The building itself is of considerable architectural interest. The Riefensberg "Juppen" Workshop Society organises guided tours to familiarise visitors with the entire manufacturing process, from start to finish.
Andelsbuch workshop and craft centre
Alongside the development of modern architecture, an independent design-orientated handicraft scene has evolved in the Bregenzerwald, the products of which are much sought after both at home and abroad. 85 innovative crafts people, ranging from carpenters to textile designers, have pooled their resources and founded this handicraft centre in the Bregenzerwald. Using this joint enterprise as a springboard, the Workshop organises exhibitions, competitions and presentations.
Hittisau museum of women– unique in Austria
The Hittisau Museum of Women houses a changing range of exhibits aimed at highlighting a number of topics relevant to women, be it from the worlds of history, art, architecture, social history, ethnology or handicrafts. In addition to the exhibitions, the Museum of Women offers a comprehensive supporting programme of events including special guided tours, talks, workshops, concerts, lectures and film shows.
Angelika Kauffmann Museum Schwarzenberg
Situated in Schwarzenberg, this museum is dedicated to the memory of the renowned artist Anna Maria Angelika Catharina Kauffmann (1741 - 1807), after whom it is named. Within the recently renovated museum building, a series of continually changing exhibitions ensures a fascinating visit around the collection.
Museum of Baroque masters
The Baroque architects of the Bregenzerwald were responsible for the construction of some 800 Baroque buildings throughout Europe. Recently a group of motivated people formed a society with a view to founding a museum in Au where their impressive achievements could be recognised and appreciated.
The little Wälderbähnle railway– a reminder of the good old days
All aboard! Riding in an original railway carriage pulled by an antique steam or diesel locomotive, take a train trip into the world of yesteryear. The little Wälderbähnle railway runs from Bezau to Schwarzenberg station, and offers a very special treat for young and old alike.
